Hands-On Learning & Practical Evaluation at AAMS

Practical examinations at Arka Academy of Management Studies (AAMS) are an essential component of the academic evaluation system for several programmes affiliated with Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Practical exams test students' ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world or simulated settings — be it computer lab work for BCA students, field work demonstrations for BSW/MSW students, or case-study presentations for BBA/PMIR learners.

All practical examinations are conducted under the supervision of an external examiner appointed by Utkal University along with an internal examiner from AAMS. Students must maintain a proper lab record/field diary and present it during the examination.

External + Internal Examiners Lab Record Mandatory 2–3 Hours Duration Utkal University Certified

Lab / Field Work Based

Practicals are conducted in AAMS labs or field settings, simulating real professional environments for all programmes.

Expert Evaluation Panel

Each practical exam is evaluated by a university-appointed external examiner alongside an AAMS internal faculty member.

Record Book Submission

A complete, duly signed lab record or field diary is compulsory for appearing in the practical examination.

Practical Examination Evaluation Pattern

The practical examination carries 50 marks and is divided into four components evaluated by internal and external examiners as per Utkal University guidelines.

Marks Distribution (50 Total)

  • Lab Record / Field Diary
    20 Marks
  • Experiment / Demonstration
    20 Marks
  • Viva Voce
    10 Marks
  • Total Practical Marks
    50 Marks

Minimum 40% marks (20/50) are required to pass the practical examination. Students absent from the practical exam will be marked as absent (AB).

Lab Record / Field Diary

A neatly maintained lab record with all experiments/observations, signed by the subject teacher, is submitted to the examiner on the day of the practical exam.

  • All experiments must be recorded
  • Signed by internal faculty
  • Brought on exam day

Experiment / Demonstration

Students perform an experiment or demonstrate a practical skill assigned by the external examiner. The performance is evaluated for accuracy, methodology and presentation.

  • Assigned on exam day
  • Marks for accuracy & method
  • Time-bound performance

Viva Voce

An oral examination conducted by both internal and external examiners to assess the student's conceptual understanding, subject knowledge and communication skills.

  • Subject knowledge tested
  • Both examiners participate
  • Communication assessed

Lab Record & Field Diary Guidelines

A proper lab record / field diary is compulsory for every student appearing in the practical examination. Follow these guidelines to ensure your record is accepted.

Format & Structure

  • Use the official lab record notebook issued by the department
  • Write experiment title, aim, procedure and observations clearly
  • Use blue/black ink only — no pencil entries in the final record
  • Draw diagrams with a ruler; label them properly

Submission & Signatures

  • Get each experiment countersigned by the subject teacher
  • The HOD/Principal must sign the front cover before exam day
  • Submit the record to the external examiner at the start of the exam
  • Missing signatures will result in deduction of record marks

Completeness Check

  • All experiments listed in the syllabus must be included
  • Index/table of contents with page numbers is mandatory
  • Include results and conclusions for every experiment
  • Incomplete records may be rejected during evaluation

Important Rules

  • No overwriting or whitener use in the final record
  • Students must bring the record on the day of the exam
  • Copying another student's record is treated as malpractice
  • Damaged/missing records will lead to zero marks in that component

How to Excel in Practical Exams

Use these expert tips from AAMS faculty to prepare thoroughly and perform confidently in your practical examination.

Practise Regularly in the Lab

Attend all lab sessions and perform each experiment multiple times. Repeated practice builds muscle memory and confidence for the actual exam.

Maintain an Updated Record

Update your lab record after every session. A complete, well-maintained record impresses examiners and earns full record marks without stress on exam day.

Prepare for Viva Voce

Revise theoretical concepts of each experiment. Examiners ask about the aim, procedure, result, error analysis and real-world applications of each practical.

Manage Lab Time Wisely

Read the assigned experiment carefully before starting. Allocate time for setup, execution and write-up. Rushing leads to errors — plan your lab session.

Know the Exam-Day Rules

Carry your admit card, college ID and a signed lab record on exam day. Arrive 15 minutes early. Know the lab safety rules and follow all examiner instructions.

Seek Faculty Guidance

Ask your subject teacher for demonstration sessions, expected viva questions and tips on how the external examiner evaluates. Faculty insight is invaluable.
